Rajmata Jijau Saheb Bhosale – The Mother of Swarajya

Rajmata Jijau Saheb Bhosale, also known as Jijabai, was not only the mother of English Nibandh Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj but also the guiding light behind the foundation of the Hindavi Swarajya. Her wisdom, courage, and values played a crucial role in shaping one of India’s greatest warriors and leaders.

Jijabai was born on 12th January 1598 in Sindkhed Raja, located in present-day Maharashtra. Her father, Lakhuji Jadhav, was a respected Maratha Hindi Nibandh noble under the Nizamshahi rule. From a young age, Jijabai was known for her intelligence, strength, and strong sense of dharma (righteousness).

She was married to Shahaji Raje Bhosale, a brave Maratha warrior. In a time of political unrest and constant war, Jijabai raised her son Shivaji with stories of Ramayana, Mahabharata, and the glory of Hindu kings. She taught him discipline, courage, and the importance of freedom.

She was not just a mother — she was a mentor, a spiritual guide, and a source of strength to Shivaji Maharaj throughout his life.

While Shivaji was young, Jijabai took care of the administration of Pune and looked after Marathi Nibandh the people. Her sense of justice, leadership, and management laid the foundation for Shivaji’s later policies as king.

She dreamed of a land free from foreign rule — a vision which later became Swarajya through her son.

Rajmata Jijabai passed away on 17th June 1674, shortly after the coronation of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Her death marked the end of an era of unmatched maternal strength and patriotism.

Rajmata Jijau was not just the mother of a king — she was the mother of an empire. Her influence, ideals, and sacrifices were key to the creation of the Maratha Empire. Even today, she is remembered as "Rajmata" — the Royal Mother — and as a symbol of strength, vision, and womanhood.

"Had there been no Jijabai, there would have been no Shivaji!"
