Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak was one of the most prominent leaders of India’s freedom struggle. He was a fearless patriot, a great scholar, a social English Nibandh reformer, and a strong advocate of Swaraj (self-rule). His famous slogan "Swaraj is my birthright and I shall have it!" became a powerful call for independence.

Tilak was born on 23rd July 1856 in Ratnagiri, Maharashtra. From childhood, he was brilliant, disciplined, and outspoken. He completed his graduation in Mathematics and Sanskrit from Deccan College, Pune, and later obtained a degree in Law.

Tilak believed that education was the key to national awakening. He co-founded the Deccan Education Society to promote modern and Indian education. He Hindi Nibandh also started two newspapers – ‘Kesari’ in Marathi and ‘The Mahratta’ in English – through which he spread awareness and criticized British rule.

Tilak was a part of the Indian National Congress and led the extremist (Garampanthi) group that believed in assertive methods to fight the British. He encouraged the use of Swadeshi goods and the boycott of foreign products. He inspired millions to join the freedom movement.

To unite people and build national pride, Tilak started public celebrations of Ganesh Chaturthi and Shivaji Jayanti. These festivals brought people Marathi Nibandh together and became platforms for patriotic expression.

Lokmanya Tilak passed away on 1st August 1920, but his ideas and spirit still live on. He was rightly called "Lokmanya," meaning "Approved by the People." His courage, leadership, and love for the nation continue to inspire generations.
